Pardon my French, but "inclement weather" drives me batty. Everyone goes daft and is all of a sudden incapable of driving or coming to work. Snow balls!

The past few days have been foggy as I've been properly sedated, which is great!, because that pain was unreal. I do not want to feel that ever again.

I managed to get an appointment with my DDS today. The dentist, he took an x-ray and then he said, "hmm" and then "yep", and then he ground one of my teeth down some. It didn't hurt because it's partially fake anyway. The way my bite is, the back teeth are the only ones that touch. Since my jaw is misaligned, one particular tooth absorbs the impact when I bump & grind (aw yeah) in my sleep. It's going to hurt like hell eventually. That's the terrible pain I'm experiencing now. I tried to discuss TMJ with him, but he waved it off, even as I persisted, as it's a hard thing to diagnose apparently and insurance companies do not cover it. Doc is certain that a mouth guard will help. It isn't clear to me how it will make the pain in my neck and head go away. I suppose that's my problem. It was what I was going to the doctor for before this whole tooth emergency began. I'm now convinced the both problems are related, so. Aha.

I've looked into it, but can't afford acupuncture, sadly. It was something that I was genuinely excited about, but it's not covered by my insurance. Chiropracters are, on the other hand. I booked an appointment for this Friday morning. I don't want to rely on pain relievers. They're great, believe me, but it's not something I want to become dependent on.

Besides from being tired all of the time and having some pain which, oddly, is not relieved by taking Vicodin, I'm fine. Maybe a little complainy. Misery, company, and all that.

Here is a post where I will try not to bellyache about my maladies: an old splinter being pushed out by my body (ouch!), a toothache (noooo!), and pains in my back and neck from a pinched nerve (little lightning bolts emanating!).

No, no, I'll try to be smart and highlight the pluses. +++

I am getting new spectacles. It was near impossible for me to choose because of problems that arise from having too. much. choice. I kept picking this particular pair, so I just purchased them before I could change my mind again.

If you have prescription glasses, then you probably already know what it means to get a fresh pair. No more glare, no squinting, no spasms, and no d'aches. The clarity is magical. It's a whole new world!

So, we're going to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras! The timing's proper as the weekend before Fat Tuesday is a 3-day one. Thanks to lovely Jen & Paul, we've got accommodations, not to mention their excellent company & NOLA wisdom. I'm so excited because I've never been to Mardi Gras festivities and, too, I was really just missing the city in general. Once you get it in your mind that you want to go, you will find a way to get there. It really didn't occur to me to actually go, but then I was digging through the record bins at Goner last weekend and I pulled up the 9th Ward Marching Band's Creepin' Up the Street LP. I didn't buy it (yet), but was intrigued, so I jotted their name down to look up later.

Maybe it's a combination of my being Southern, loving New Orleans, and liking marching bands (it was one of the tolerable things about high school), but I totally got a lump in my throat AND was shaking my ass watching their videos. How fun! I immediately sent them fan mail and inquired about their schedule for this year. I hope we get to see them. Even if we don't, I don't think we will be disappointed, because there's so much to do, but it would be terrific! And I ended up ordering that record . Ninth ward!

Earlier today, I was perusing my twittah feed and noticed a post from Lloyd, owner of Get This! Gallery in ATL:

I got on ye olde hand held wizard device (because that's what it is) and gave him a ring. Firstly, it was really good to catch up with Lloyd. For those who know & adore him, he's doing well. We might meet up in Miami for Art Basel. Secondly, it looks like I'll be acquiring some art. The significance is twofold: we've been having a hard time committing anything to our walls, walls in which we own. I don't know why. It's annoying. But, hey, here's something I feel confident about! Too, for detractors of twitter, this is my second time this week that I've purchased art this way. Breaking news, good jokes, band updates, recipes, links to art -- it's tailored to your liking, so if you don't like it, it's your own damn fault. I think this is a boring argument, though, because if you don't get it, you don't get it. But, if you don't get it and are trying to, keep trying! Damn.

What's tops in January 2012

1. Internet radio: I know what I like and you know what you like & we can make playlists all day and night, but sometimes you've gotta get out of that vacuum and leave it to the pros. Good DJs are ones that introduce me to new (or new to me) music. A few of my favorites:

The Crystal Telephone with Rotary Rachel. I'm not going to even try to peg her style, so just have a listen. If you don't listen to her show, you should at least follow her on twitter. She is so clever & funny, I'm afraid if I go on about it, it will reveal my crush.

Beats In Space with Tim Sweeney. This is for folks who have an affinity for electronic music. If that's not your bag, I can't help you. Move along.

They're Only Records Paul with Paul Thomson. This one's good for classics, variety & weirdness.

These radio stations are usually pretty reliable, too: KEXP (Seattle), WFMU (NY), and WNYU (NY)

2. Broccoli slaw -- seriously. What can't you do with it? Burrito filler, veg egg rolls, salad, and so forth. It's so good for you, but more importantly, it's very delicious. If you can't figure out what to do with it, then what are you even doing in the kitchen? Since we're talkin' food, let's give high praise to clementines and the fact that I learned to cook aloo gobi and quite well, too.

3. Eureka Springs, Arkansas. ATM hasn't been since the 90s and I haven't been in say... 10 years? We try to take a mini-holiday in January to combat winter blues and for the past couple of years, we've gone to Dallax. Being short on both time & $$$, we decided to have an in-state break. Good idea! you say. And how! We stayed at the Crescent Hotel ("You've gotta do it once!" everyone said), had a really great meal at Local Flavor Cafe (start with the baked brie), and rounded out the evening with drinks at The Stone House, which is very cozy & smells faintly of cedar. Be sure to drink way too much cava here. Alannah knew the gang running that joint, so we could hang out longer than the 10 p.m. close time. I had too much ~~wine~~ fun. I am looking forward to going back.

So, as you look at these photos, please be on the lookout for any spooky supernatural happenings. I haven't been able to spot any myself. But, we spent the night in one of the most haunted buildings in America! But, all I heard throughout the night was the radiator!

4. Crystal Bridges Museum of Art. From Eureka Springs, we trekked over to Bentonville to visit the new museum. My whole life, I've never taken to the view that Arkansas is the most backwards state of the Union. I've assigned that designation to some of our neighbors to the N, S, E & W of us. On the contrary, Arkansas is a gem! A diamond, in fact. I was born & raised here, so perhaps I'm biased. But, if one maintains the dim view that this is a place lacking any culture or substance, then I'm convinced you've never even been here OR that you never left the River Market. Much to the world's *dismay (and numerous Arkansans), we got Crystal Bridges Museum. I'd say that it's a work in progress, but it is still quite good. Definitely a big score for our lovely little state.

7. Scouting NY is a wonderful blog by Nick, a movie location scout. If you are like me and always wonder what it's like to go into certain buildings around here, this is like that, but in glorious world famous New York City! Bookmark this one. Nick is raising $$$ to make a film. I'm willing to bet that it's worthy of a few of your dollars.

8. Apartamento Magazine. It is self-described as ''an everyday life interiors magazine", which is spot on. Doable interior design & decorating, mostly with what you've got. With a little rearranging and better lighting, your home can be wonderful! Good voyeuristic content, as you can peek into homes of other's, but not in a Better Homes kind of way.

9. Weekends @ home. It's hard fighting the urge to hop into the car and just go to Memphis, Hot Springs, or NWA. But, with the upcoming trip to Vietnam, it makes sense to stick around and work on the house. I like it there with the hanging out, cooking, and even cleaning.

10. Turner Classic Movies. If the t.v. is on, it's probably on this channel. I recently watched Pressure Point, starring Sidney Pointier -- his performance was so great that I didn't even realize I was holding my breath until I was gasping for air. Watching old movies forces me to slow down and pay attention and really listen. I love looking at the sets and costumes. I actually enjoy being horrified by old timey thinking and ideas. Some things, good and bad, don't change.

At least we don't have to peel wallpaper.

I took off work early today because I was feeling terrible. I've gone and slept through the day, and pretty soundly too. It was just what I needed because I'm feeling much better. ATM was so kind to pick me up some aloo gobi take-out, so I'm proper fed. I've taken a quick lesson in Vietnamese online and had a bath. I'm on top of my game, so, how about some freewheelin' writing whilst listening to The Cramps? Apropos.

On Monday, we were going to paint our bedroom walls. What started out as a straightforward project is now a full-blown undertaking. ATM started spackling problem spots and I was about to begin laying painters tape on the molding when we realized that if we wanted to do a job well done, then we'd have to paint the ceiling AND the molding before painting the walls because it appears the previous owner did not lay down tape, or pretty much do anything properly in this house ever, and got that ugly paint everywhere. It's infuriating. Every project here is contingent on our fixing the mistakes of the past. Pish. Anyway, it'll be so rewarding when we are done. And every time we do something to this house, I love it more. You just wait and see. We will turn this little house into something else.

The current hue, what we call nicostained, makes the light very weird and disorienting. The lighter color will definitely correct the lighting situation and our mood. And I am very happy that we're even paying any attention to our bedroom, since there are so many other things around here that needs to be fixed, replaced, or remodeled.

If we have time, we will start dismantling the cabinets over the stove. I've stopped making weekend plans for the time being so we can hang around to work on this old house. I'm glad to do it.

Tet is on Monday, the 23rd, but we'll be celebrating this Sunday at the temple. As usual, I'm looking forward to it. Year of the Dragon. Collin won't be accompanying us, which saddens me. I've gone with Collin more than anyone and we've gone for many years. At any rate, I really hope that erryone has a crackin' good new year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! OH, TWELVE! I've got some things I'd like to accomplish this year including trying to honestly care for myself, travel big (Viet Nam in March. Possibilities: Chicago, Arizona, New Orleans, & Miami), perhaps get something significant done to the house, and KMHD and I will lay out a timeline for our future business endeavor and start doing the dull tasks that entails. That's a manageable list. I broke a big, nasty habit last year (smoking cigarettes - eeeew!) and would like to try to either break another bad habit or start a good one. I'm not going to file all of this under 'resolutions' because it's something I'm constantly working towards anyway and I don't think I really gain from the benefits of a new year bounce.

The Cabin/NYE was sublime this go around. It's really all in the company you keep. ATM, KMHD, Jonathan, Steve & Shawn were the stars of the show with special guests Andrew & Hannah. I did miss Collin, though. I stayed up beyond the stroke of midnight, drank steadily throughout w/o forming a sour disposition or a sour stomach, and this hangover is actually manageable. Nothing that copious amounts of ice water, couch lounging & a Lush bathbomb can't help. Over the course of the evening, I took stock of my life -- I like where some things are going, but some things (and people) make me really unhappy. A few adjustments and straight up severing negative ties and everything will be much improved. Housekeeping.

Anyway.

I can't tell you how many times I've considered closing shop and starting anew. I've struggled with content & substance and the lack thereof. But, wait, didn't I start this thing as a place to keep track of what I've been up to, so it'd be sequential and orderly when I need to do some recalling? It's a journal. Picking up regular readers, really, is just bonus. Thanks for being here.

I think the struggle, too, is that I can't write. Ho ho! THERE, I SAID IT. I do not have the talent to express in written word, and sometimes out loud, what it is I'm feeling, which is ultra frustrating. If you don't have anything to say, don't, right? Too, I don't like having my time wasted, so I try not do that to others. I don't want this to be a waste of time, mine or yours. Schizophrenic. Paranoid. Uch, I'll get it sorted.

I do know what I don't want FEAR ANTS to be & that's a start.

4. I send a lot of post, but rarely get anything in response. In this day & age, it surprises me not. Which is why when I received a hand written letter from Collin, I was not just elated, but genuinely surprised, too! I carried it around in my back pocket for a day to show off, should I run into anyone. Thank you, guy! Didn't see that comin'. xx

5. I'm in love with cooking & trying new culinary delights again. I've been a subscriber to Bon Appetit for many years now and am only now cooking recipes out of it. Out of the Dec '11 issue alone, I've made the shakshuka (recommended!), forked oven-roasted potatoes, and lemony slice + bake cookies -- they are all ace. Lately, our favorite staple is simple avocado toast. Toasted multi-grain bread with ultra ripe avocado spread on it like butter. Salt, pepper, lemon juice & red pepper flakes. Heavenly. Have with tea. Here's the shakshuka, which you serve with toasted bread or pita:

6. Lonesome Dove. I know this hardass named Amy who is loud, (c)rude, filthy & funny. It is no good when we come together - I absolutely adore her. She once told me when she was in London long ago, she was finishing Lonesome Dove at a cafe and the ending made her openly sob in front of everyone. This coming from Amy, I was intrigued! I'm reading it -- enjoying it immensely. Classic. Recommended.

7. My boss, Judge Collins Kilgore. When he's not driving me mad with these crises that he invents, he's a really funny, weird, stand-up guy. We talk about bonsai (this is a one-sided convo), furoshiki, books (we read the same things), and food, amongst everything. While I keep having these awful pay issues (judicial funds running out), he said he'd pay my salary out of his own pocket. He is such a good boss! Hip hip!

8. My dad, the other old man in my life. Despite his being a total *maniac, he's very supportive of KMHD and I. We've had an extremely strained relationship most of my life, but things have improved so much over the past year and a half, I've gone from calling him "Mike" to "Dad". We just had a visit with him. It was good. You should see his house.

*Recovering alcoholic, 2 time war veteran with terrible health issues, including PTSD, OCD, and just being a general weirdo.

10. My cousin MyTam beat cancer! She suffers the side effects of radiation, brain shunts, and other treatments, but she is cancer free. The experience helped us realize that time is of the essence, so we are planning a little trip to Miami in a year's time to go to Art Basel Miami Beach.

11. Fayetteville, AR. On a very recent trip, I had a lovely time, thanks to Alannah. I didn't go to school there and visited sparsely way back when, so I do not have the deep seated connection that a lot of my friends have, but I occasionally feel the tug of NWA. This time around, I didn't have to eat at restaurants that are nostalgic to my previous hosts/hostesses, like Hugo's or Tim's Pizza -- we ate @ Bordino's, which was quite good. I didn't have time to go this time, but I love running into people in the maze that is Dickson St. Bookshop. Just turn a corner. Alannah made reservations for us to go to Crystal Bridges, but we didn't stay that long, as I was itching to get back home. I believe we'll be up that way in January to further explore. What little I did see was amazing.

12. The Thin Man. What started out as a frequent crossword puzzle clue (Nick and Nora's dog: Asta) became a favorite series for me. Recently, TCM showed them all in a row and I stayed up late to watch. What a pair, that Nick & Nora! I love this look that Nora gives Nick throughout:

It is a surprise to NO ONE that I'm busy, right? Today, I am attempting to rearrange, move, reorganize piles that I have all over my house. This is the task of tasks, one that fills me with disgust. Why do I have so much stuff and not enough plants & art? ARSON. There'll be a purgin', sooner than later. Typical of new years.

I'm working on a nice, big post. I think it's got a lot of protein, which ought keep thou (me me me!) satisfied.

We went to New Orleans for Thxgiving 2011. Frankly, I can't think of a better way to enjoy the holiday. Maybe a warm, beautiful beach? Any place where you can enjoy piles of seafood, really. I love N.O. It is everything I need it to be. We will definitely go back. One day, I'd like to go with friends.

The first thing we did when we rolled into town was find Felix's, recommended by Food Orleans. [Jen's recommendations are solid.] Felix's is interesting in that it is an actual oyster bar where you step right up and have your oysters at the bar. There is sit-down dining, but if you are just stepping in for a quick beer and a dozen oysters on the half shell, the bar is ideal. We went to Felix's THREE TIMES. The food is first-rate (steer clear of the coleslaw) and the atmosphere is just the way I like it -- no frills, genuinely friendly servers, Dixie Beer in the bottle, Stella on tap, strong iced tea, and Crystal Hot Sauce. We can vouch for the red beans & rice, fried shrimp poor boy, craw fish etouffe, and blackened grilled shrimp. Be cautious with that horseradish! I got heavy-handed with it and it actually blinded me for a moment and made me feel as if I were about to go into cardiac arrest.

On this trip, we consumed meat. You can veg in New Orleans with relative ease, but we wanted no restrictions.

For Thxgiving day, we had our Big Meal lined up for 7:30 p.m. @ Commander's Palace. We regretfully did not plan very well for breakfast or lunch. A lot of places were closed. That's what we get for assuming New Orleans never takes holiday breaks. So, we popped into this place called St. Charles Tavern on St. Charles Ave. It was terrible. The food was just o.k. (they actually served a broken hollandaise sauce to me!), but it was the service that made us sorry we ever stepped foot into that establishment. A waitress, not our own, approached and asked if we had intentions of ordering breakfast, as if our sitting there drinking coffee was really putting her out. After it became clear that our order was never entered, the service went from bad to worse. I'll never understand when people foul up and then are total b-holes about it. I would understand if ATM & I were jerks, but we're not. Even after all of that, ATM still had to inquire about our food situation. Not a typical New Orleans experience. Avoid.

O.K., so Commander's Palace. Wow. That place is incredible. I want that to be our Thanksgiving tradition. I have no photos because you just don't do that there. You arrive dressed to the nines and you'd better have a reservation. While an abundant, most professional and courteous waitstaff whirls around you, tending to your every need (including ones you didn't even know you had) you drink wine, Laphroaig, and eat the best food. ATM & I partook in a tiny culinary adventure and tried escargot for the first time. We figured that if you're gonna go there, you do it somewhere like Commander's. Our bravery paid off because it wasn't just good, it was delightful! It came drizzled in bone marrow jus on a piece of garlic toast. It was nothing as I imagined. The closest thing I can compare it to is overcooked macaroni pasta? It tastes like whatever you cook it in, really. For our main course, we had the traditional turkey dinner, chosen mostly because I really enjoy P & J Oyster dressing. Everything we had on our plate was tops. We rounded out dinner (and our bellies) with their bread pudding & espressos. Goodness. Contentment. Thankings. I had to be rolled out of there. We are really looking forward to it again. If you go, save your pennies, because that kind of thing don't come cheap!

I'm going to take this opportunity to proclaim "to hell with Black Friday!" It's a terrible annual event that makes me horrified at people. Like, more than usual. For the past several years, I've called it by another name: Buy Nothing Day. Sometimes, that's hard to do, especially if you're away from home. So, we shopped from local businesses like Southern Candymakers (they make the best pralines) and Peaches Records. We usually don't eat at chain restaurants (although St. Charles Tavern nearly made me reconsider) and try to buy local whenever we can. It is so easy to not buy landfill items like t-shirts & magnets & mugs & beads & candles & shotglasses you don't even want. Look, I don't really enjoy proselytizing about, well, everything, but, you know, it's how I roll. Everything you do affects someone or something else, a lot of the time in an adverse way. So, be mindful, right? If you must shop, shop local, whenever possible. Reduce waste, in all areas of your life. All that to say that perishables make the best gifts. I enjoy it when people share food from their travels, so I try to do the same.

Yesterday, we were in Hot Springs, sitting at the bar in Belle Arti, the best bar in town if you are seeking a quiet, dimly lit place to drink, and ATM leaned over to me and said, "We stay busy, don't we?" It's true, we always have something to do. I'm glad for it. Hope you guys are staying busy and productive in a way that makes you happy. Give 'em hell!

I'm in rare form this season in that I'm actually looking forward to the holiday season. I can't wait to deck the halls (I'll wait until after Thxgiving, I ain't no Xmas Creep!) while listening to our traditional Perry Como Christmas record and drinking copious amounts of Silk Nog. Ho ho ho!

This past week, Heather has been assisting me (Read: doing all of the hard work) in making Xmas stockings for ATM & I. Here is a little sneak peek:

I'm not a very artistic person, so I'm really happy with the results thus far. I've been working on them solo these past couple of evenings, so here's hoping that I don't spoil them.

As a result of this project, I've been listening to French & German house music non-stop, which has been totally uplifting.

Last weekend, my little family unit consisting of ATM, myself, KMHD, mum & Larry (our stepdud) went to Memphis to meet ATM's mum, stepfather, brother, sister-in-law & nephew. Aside from Larry being a total asshat (13 y.o. me wanted to shout, "YOU'RE NOT MY REAL DAD!" at him), it went really well. After lunch @ Interstate BBQ, we went to the Memphis Zoo. Even though ATM's family have always treated me (and KMHD, too) as one of their own, it's official now, and it is so sweet!

My mother-in-law always thinks of the little things, which I appreciate greatly. She brought petit fours! Love her.

Now it wasn't 100% attendance, but 3 out of 4 ain't bad! I got to wine/dine with Leigh & Keiko @ Capital Bar & Grill this past Friday. We made future holiday plans. I love it when we get together. Heather, too. I hope planetary alignment happens and it works out. Love you girls.

NOV '11 TOP TEN

I really ought to post these lists @ the end of the month since 1. the month is not yet up and 2. because I have to write in past tense, no thanks to weirdos + stalkers. BUT, I wanted to get this out there.

1. November 1: Day one of Dias de los Muertos. All Saints Day. My birthday. It also marks the one year anniversary of my Ba Ngoai's passing. This was the second year in a row that I couldn't spend it with ATM due to real shit timing, but, thankfully, a few friends helped me celebrate properly. My lovely friends & family give good gift.

2. Thxgiving in New Orleans. Last year's trip was so great, we obviously have to do it again. I've been doing a little recon at FOOD ORLEANS for ideas, tips, and insider information. All it does is make me want to be there nowish. We've got great accommodations. Travel makes me happy. New Orleans makes me happy.

3. Last week, I bought some mussels, Argentine red shrimp & oysters from Floyd's Meat and Seafood. Subsequently, I made mussels in tomato broth, grilled shrimp (that tasted like lobster), and Manhattan Clam Chowder, not at the same time, mind. I am so not done with you, shellfish!

4. Books, shelved. I did that ol' design trick where you shelve by color. Our house is becoming.

5. Bought old and expired film for my Polaroid 500. First box has been a dud so far, but maybe I'll get lucky with the rest. I may just have to find a different camera, so I can get fresh film from The Impossible Project.

6. Feminist root beer. I bought the herbs, bark, and roots to make root beer from scratch. Still trying to sort a few things: an exact recipe, what to bottle it in, and what to call it if it's even worth bottling and naming. This is something that I would like to succeed at in large measures.

7. Kitchen demolition, COMING SOON. Before we can remodel, we have to repair some jury-rigged fuckery that's going on behind the walls. Because we can only go as far as we save funds, I won't start looking at design blogs on how I would like my future kitchen to look like, even though I have a good idea, but am glad we're heading in that direction.

8. Reading up on traveling to Viet Nam. Any advice? The fact that we're going isn't even real to me yet. Is this happening? I'm really glad to have this opportunity to go to one of the homelands and spend time with my mum and sister. Duh.

9. Hot Springs, Arkansas. What a weird & fascinating little city. I love it there and I believe my future is in there somewhere. KMHD & I played hooky there last week. It was fun. Massages, a little flea marketing, and eating. I need to go back for these things...

Red Red Wine

As with anything else I post, maybe only I am amused by this. I'm not a big drinker, never have been. Recent over preparedness has left me with several bottles of red wine, so I decided to give drinking red wine an earnest go.

I have been, on more than one occasion three sheets to the wind, the last time being at the Kilgore wedding, which was May of this year. So, I can remember the last time I over-imbibed. The sad truth is that when I do drink, it's a 100% effort, so I go a wee bit overboard. Well, why not? I'm rarely in the mood! It's something that takes me at least three days to recover from. Right, so my usual spirits of choice are, depending on the occasion or location, gin (& tonics), (shots of) tequila, (bottle of) sparkling wine, or a beer or two. But, nothing compares to the warm hug of red wine. Guys, Y U NO TELL ME ABOUT RED WINE?

How is it that I'm only now discovering the allure of grape juice plus?!!! It's awesome! It is a whole different kind of ... intoxication.

Cortez

My aunt and uncle live in Cortez, but it takes 15 minutes to drive into town from their ranch. We spent a little time in town, but it's so small, it didn't take long to walk up and down Main Street. Our first stop was Notah-Dineh Trading Co. It was recommended by Pati & David. I really wanted to look at Navajo rugs and Zuni fetishes. I've never been to a trading company, so I've nothing to compare it to, but it was interesting -- lots of things to look at including turquoise, Pendleton throws and saddle blankets, rugs, pottery, and baskets. They also have a small museum in the basement.

They have on display some amazing Navajo rugs:

The significance of this one is that it's the largest Two Gray Hills rug known. TGH means there were no dyes used. Those are the colors of the sheep's wool:

Mesa Verde

We spent two days and one night in Mesa Verde National Park. It's a fascinating place and has completely renewed my interest in Ancient Puebloan peoples.

We saw a lot of deer, some elk, and chipmunks. At one point, whilst hiking, we heard a deep growl. Then we smelled feline spray. Now, I 'm not saying it was a mountain lion, but I'm not ruling it out. It was a little off-putting because it was early and we were the only ones on the trail. Thankfully, nothing came of it. I think that next time we go to Mesa Verde, I'd like to do some tent camping there, so we can be immersed in and surrounded by the wilderness. The lodge has a great restaurant called the Metate Room -- I'd skip the breakfast, because it's not very good, but their dinners are incredible. Our table was next to a celebrity's, but we don't even know who he was. Anyway, it was one of the better meals we had while we were in Colorado. A tip: you can find pottery bits everywhere in the Coyote Village.

We spent an afternoon in Durango, CO with my Aunt Marcie and her brood. Durango is cute. Slightly patchouli-scented, liberal, and very friendly. We consumed good food and great beer from local breweries, specifically Steamworks Brewing Co.'s Lizard Head Red and Ska Brewing Co.'s Pinstripe Red Ale. Durango's high ratio of local breweries is enviable. I loaded up on a few cases of beer from Ska Brewing Co. to share with my lady friends @ my upcoming birthday party.

Occupy Little Rock

How about a respite from honeycation photos? This Sunday past, KMHD and I visited Occupy Little Rock to say hello and offer our support. They'd just gotten rained out, which dampened their mood and spirit as they weren't the happiest of campers, but we didn't hold it against them. We inquired about a needs list and then took off to fulfill some of it. I didn't take photos of the Occupiers themselves as I didn't want to make them uneasy.

I returned yesterday evening for General Assembly. The hot topic was whether the Occupiers would move to another location (they are currently set up outside the Clinton Presidential Library) offered by the City of Little Rock that is in a less-trafficked area, but toilets and a dumpster would be provided and they could occupy indefinitely. I did not stay the entire meet, but they eventually agreed to move with a 92% consensus. While I was there, the debates raged, with an almost 50/50 split. Since I'm not an Occupier myself, I merely observed and didn't vote. I really hope to be helpful from the outside.

Trail Canyon Ranch

Trail Canyon Ranch, owned by my Aunt Pati and Uncle David, is in Cortez, Colorado. Snugly situated in a valley between two mountains, there's about 500 acres to explore. Amagad, it is simply sublime. Please, book a stay there. You would adore it and Pati and David are some of the loveliest people known. You don't even have to leave their property to hike, bike, climb, stargaze, and see ancient glyphs and ruins! We stayed here every night, 'cept one, and it served as home base. Lucky, lucky us.

After our arrival, the very first thing we did after hugging my aunt and uncle's neck was hop on some bikes and ride up the mountain to check out the waterfall before sundown. We really needed to move after being in the car for two days.

The cottonwoods have turned their brilliant yellow. Just so's you know, anywhere there is a cottonwood, there is water.

They've got six horses and a couple of burros. Not really suitable for riding as they are mostly adopted wild horses or aged. My Aunt Pati is a master rider and trainer.

This is Sherman, a one and a half year old wild mustang, recently adopted. He is jumpy as all hell, but really sweet once you gain his trust, usually with treats in hand. Up close, you can see his silver coat coming through. Our casita is behind his corral.

On the morning of our last day, we climbed up the mountain to explore a cave that had ancient soot and corn cobs inside. The corn has been examined by a corn expert (Yes, there is such a thing and is this lady's life work to examine ancient corn!) and she determined it to be about 1,500 years old. It was an extremely moving experience to visit where ancient Puebloean people have tread.

Although it afforded us great views/photos of the place, it was really stupid to climb that high without an adequate water supply. High altitudes + extreme aridity + no cellular service = city slicker danger. There are no trails, so you would sometimes have to double back just to ascend/descend a few yards. Footing is iffy and I actually sprained my left ankle. Cactii, yucca plants, scorpions, and tarantulas abounds. Also, the mountains are deceptive in that they look easy to conquer.

That evening, we hopped on the ATV to run up to the waterfall, allowing our trip to come full circle. ATVing is so. much. fun.

1. Lifted directly from a letter I wrote to Collin:

"I’ve been drinking on some root beer lately. Virgil’s is my preferred brand of choice. I learned today that they SELL IT IN LITTLE KEGS. What. Heavenly. Anyway, I often get to thinkin’ how nice it would be to try brewing my own batch of root beer. Taking it further, I think that I’d like to brew a FEMINIST root beer. Well, why not? I got on the internet and plugged “feminist root beer” in the search box and ‘lo and behold! No results! Could I be a first? So, I shared my idea with Andrew and he did not flinch. I think I’ll have to wait a couple of paychecks to start this project, but I am beyond excited. I wonder if you can ship bottles in the mail. OR, you could just come home and get some home brewed feminist root beer from your dear old friend..."

Even if it was in jest, as soon as I let known my intentions, a person I know said he wanted to make the antithesis of feminist root beer. I wanted to laugh to keep from cringing, but it really wasn't funny to me. Reproductive freedom is still being threatened to this day, which is no laughing matter. Sadly, in the U.S., feminism is not even on the back burner, it's off the stove. Sort it out, people! Sip on a refreshing brew whilst you ponder the importance of gender equality and how to make everyone, not just girls and women, smarter, safer, and healthier, the world over.

Regarding the root beer itself, I think I'll have to experiment with the ingredients. I tried a root beer last night that had cinnamon in it, which was an unexpected, but lovely twist. I wonder that if you use molasses, do you use less or more than regular sugar? I know for certain I'll use Mountain Valley Spring Water to give it genuine Arkansas flavor. Very much looking forward to this project.

3. Veganomicon <---I treated myself to the alleged best vegan cookbook ever. With a great title like that, how can you go wrong? Our goal is to actually cook from it. As people who are try to go meatfree 95% of the time, we are also trying to cut back on the bread and cheese and focus more on grains and vegetables. I think this is a great way to get to there. Too, I used tarragon for the first time.

Thinking about calling over my friends, ordering take-out, and making Mexican sugar skulls, all while drinking wine. Art party!

9. I AM GOING TO VIET NAM IN MARCH 2012. That is less than six months away! The reality hasn't hit me yet. I don't even know what to do first!

Met KMHD & my stepmum for breakfast this morning. Mayumi was kind to bring me flowers in celebration of my marriage.

One day, we'd love to have a beautiful pair of bookshelves handcrafted by Black Swan Carpentry, but, for now, these will have to do because the spines of some of our books are in need of sitting upright on a bookshelf. Too, we'll be able to remove unpacked boxes of books that have been sitting behind the couch this whole time. I'm quite pleased with the new shelves, especially since we customized them with the Japanese decorative paper. This Halloween will mark two years since we've moved in. Progress is achingly slow, so when we get a little closer to making the place come together, it is quite gratifying.

As we age, we procure more and more stuff. I try to be really picky about what we let into the house, opting to not settle for landfill junk items. That said, here are some things that got through our doors:

I love stationery. I still send letters via the US Postal Service once or twice a week. So, I got this thing, since we've laid roots here in AR and it's been decided that I will keep my name.

A little before ATM and I married, my friends treated me to dinner, cocktails, and a little hen party embarrassment. I'm only getting around to recognizing what they've done for me because we wanted to keep the details of our day private. I am so, so grateful for this bunch of women who know what I like, know how to have a good time, and make me feel loved.

Too, major thanks to Heather, Keiko & Leigh for enabling me to acquire my new favorite kitchen object, a grill pan. Uhn! I've already used it a thousand times and I just find it insane that I've just now gotten around to having one. Also, they got me a penis cookie cutter. I can't say that I've used it a thousand times or even once, but I think certain folks will be getting some real special holiday treats this year.

I had to let all of the weirdness and craziness of the past five days pass before I wrote. It had settled right behind my face, making me hurt and ache all over.

The word re: my job is that I'll get to keep my position because it is regarded essential. A lot of very nice judges (mine included) argued that the trial court assistants should not have to shoulder this burden alone and offered to take a pay cut themselves and other kind alternatives. Further, I may not have to suffer a pay cut yet. YET. The Administration of Justice (henceforth known as "AOJ") will request that the governor tap into the rainy day fund to float us until Feb. '12, or the next legislative fiscal year. In the meantime, they will be investigating and trying to sort where all of the money from the AOJ fund has gone and what needs to be done to ensure that this never happens again. Normally, there is up to a $10 million surplus. In my opinion, one that I share with my boss and other judges, something ain't right. Obviously this matter needs to be looked into.

I feel relieved, naturally. I'll still be pulling a full paycheck and enjoying benefits. But, I was ready, man. I was shopping plane tickets to NYC and was going to join the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Because things are really shit right now. My job isn't 100% secure and this problem will reoccur. Everything terrible you hear in the news -- layoffs, no healthcare insurance, losing a home, pay cuts -- this is stuff that is happening to people I know and care about. I think that Occupy Wall Street summed it up nicely HERE. Things are coming to a head and, well, we need to go somewhere. And yeah, it's raw, naive, and the demands are many, unknown, or vague. But, people have peacefully come together en masse because what else is there to do? If you don't have a job, going to NYC and risking police brutality or jail doesn't seem like such a big risk.

To add to my exhaustive Friday, we went to the Evelyns/Lemonheads show @ the Rev Room that night. We caught the last few songs of The Evelyns, and they were alright. They've changed the line up quite a bit since I've last seen them, so it was an unexpected sound. I couldn't even get into the second band whose name I've already forgotten, thankfully. And then there was the Lemonheads. Evan Dando. What a weirdo. I hope that it's a midlife crisis that he's suffering. Otherwise, what a gross, sad old man. We shouldn't have gone to that show. You shouldn't mess with NOstalgia, that stuff is no good. I'm glad that we supported the Evelyns, and I am glad I got to see the Lemonheads perform "It's A Shame About Ray" and "Rudderless", but the rest of it was a damn embarrassment. I am, however, amused by how many rednecks love the Lemonheads. Soft side.

After the show, I couldn't fall asleep fast enough, so Saturday would be here. (I did have a minor set back with my bank that doesn't have an open lobby on Saturday, which is terribly inconvenient for me. I really need to open a safety deposit box! But, anyway.) ATM & I had plans to meet Matt, Summer, Brittany, Steven & Aaron @ Boulevard for coffee and then walk over to the Food Truck Festival. Having coffee was rad. Walking around downtown was rad. However, I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I waited nearly 2.5 hours in line for some shit food. The turnout far exceeded everyone's expectations and there simply wasn't enough trucks to serve everyone in a timely manner. Too, you had to buy tickets because they were not accepting cash and we bought $40 worth, so we felt we had to wait in line. I got sunburned and extremely hangry. Thankfully, we stuck it out and didn't turn on each other. There were two redeeming qualities about that whole ordeal: the people we got to hang out with and the weather. Seriously, Comrades, we owe it to each other to do something fun to make up for the misery that was the Food Truck Fest. I'm going to have to let FTF sort it before I ever consider going again.

We made plans to meet up with everyone later that evening, but we were so beat down by Helios, that we couldn't even go out if we wanted. Sunday was better in that I got things accomplished. I got up, watched the rainbow show in the living room with the cats, made coffee, and ate a breakfast prepared by ATM. We started assembling our bookshelves, but had to abandon the job because we lacked enough decorative Japanese paper to complete it, which is maddening because, UGH, I had to order more, and it arrives by mail, and it's just another week gone by that it's not complete, not to mention that it costs even more money. What's the old saying? Measure a billion times, cut once?

I've been cooking, baking, and clearing away clutter.

Ah, finally. I'm feeling something about this whole pay slash/possible lay off. The tears came while I was eating my omelette lunch at my desk. What will I do? How is it that I'm moving backward, not forward? Two weeks into my marriage and I'm already a financial burden! You know, the normal response.

Yesterday evening, I informed ATM, mum & KMHD that if I did lose my job, I'd probably go to Liberty Plaza/NYC for a few days to Occupy Wall Street. There's no need for me to attempt to be reasonable and try to sort things straightaway. I need to take my heartbreak, anger, and passion elsewhere and be with like-minded people. I can't think of a better place.

In the event that I do not lose my job, well, it won't be business as usual for sure. I can't live with the constant threat of having my salary, benefits, or the job itself stripped away. Looks like I have a lot of figurin' to do. I'll at least start by supporting those protesters. Occupy Wall Street gets minimal news coverage (I mean, c'mon, the Tea Party gets 100% coverage) and zero support from noncommittal progressives who constantly make excuses for their lack of supporting fucking anything. It's so annoying!

For supper, ATM & I went to the new Honduran restaurant in our neighborhood. I really didn't know what to expect, but the food was better than I'd imagined, although I can't offer any praise for the chips and salsa they brought out to the table. It was not what I am accustomed to, so I could be erring in judgment. Maybe Honduran-style salsa is supposed to be really thin and runny. It was flavorful, at least.

Since it was our maiden voyage, we wanted to try a few things, so we ordered a veggie burrito which comes with a plain salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato pieces, with a creamy dressing) on the side. We also ordered a cheese pupusa, a bean pupusa, a side of curtido, a side rice & beans, and some papas fritas. The food was gratifying on many levels and ATM proclaimed it to be the best burrito he's had in awhile. Bold claim, sir!

Little things...

I ordered some decorative Japanese paper for a future project. It arrived today and looks so much better in person than online. So pleased!

We have a rainbow maker in our living room. For around 15 minutes a day, it puts on a 'show', throwing rainbows all over the front room, which are not easy to capture on camera. I genuinely enjoy those minutes. Spectral evidence:

We got migas for breakfast @ Brazil Cafe. Every time I reflect on those migas, I fill with rage at how bland and subpar they were. I mean, they looked good, but were such a disappointment. I had to really hot sauce them up beyond recognition. And their coffee was bullshit, too. It was all flavored and horrible. It will be difficult for me to give them another shot:

On the way home from Dallax, KMHD & I craved cafeteria food (SHAME!), so we stopped at Bryce's in Texarkana. Haaaaaaaaaaaaa. In all honesty, this was our best meal in TX. Is it any surprise that we were the youngest ones there?

So, I'm actually going through a bit of a crisis right now. I just learned that my salary will be deeply slashed. The calm is wearing off and I'm feeling like a lunatic right now. Have any of you felt the effects of the economy yet? We've had some pains, but they were relatively minor. I thought we were doing slightly better than o.k. How are you dealing?

I know that I'm going to have to get a second job. There's really no way around it. I'll do it, of course, but it makes me weary just thinking about it. It's time for me to get real about a lot of things, not just finances.

Frankly, I thought my position was a little more secure than most, but the way our economy is now, I guess any job is at risk, even essential government ones.

I don't really know what else to say about it.

Went camping w/ ATM + Zach this past weekend. Because of burn bans, we couldn't go to our usual haunts, but tried something new by heading north toward Heber Springs. We ended up getting a spot by the Red River. There were a lot of people, which is a little off putting because we are accustomed to having whole campgrounds to ourselves OR sparsely occupied, but it didn't spoil our trip. Weather conditions ideal, got some walking in, saw wildlife, read, listened to the game on the radio, ate well -- it was a perfect 10. I really needed that!

For supper, I made chili + cornbread. (So as to not mislead anyone, I made the chili + cornbread in advance for supreme ease.)

The very best part of the meal was dessert, of course. Grilled peaches w/ cream. Heavenly. I now have a crippling addiction to them. And right when peaches are about to be out of season! So soft, warm, and sweet! I wish I had a little cinnamon to sprinkle on it, but it was still pretty amazing w/o it. Will certainly be adding cinnamon to the spice kit.

Night before last, I made stuffed poblano peppers and the chile corn custard that KMHD brought to Tofu Happening . I totally destroyed the kitchen doing it, but it was well worth it. Custard recipe linked above, here's how I made the peppers:

Needs:

2 c rice

1 c black beans

1 c corn

1 med onion (chopped)

3 cloves garlic (minced)

6 poblano peppers

1 c shredded cheese (I did a mix of white cheddar and Monterey, but it's a personal choice)

1 t chili powder

1 T cumin

S & P

lime

cilantro

oil

Make rice in advance. Like the day before or in the morning to be ready by evening. Roast your peppers on the stove, blackening all sides. It takes a few mins. per side, so you can do some prep work. After blackening, put peppers in a paper bag to cool. Preheat oven to 350.

In the meantime, saute onions in oil, adding garlic towards the end there to avoid burning/bitter. Add the chili powder & cumin, mix well. Stir in black beans and corn. Add rice, lime juice to taste (a lot is good!), salt, cilantro -- M.I.X. Make any season adjustments. Filling is done.

Remove peppers from paper bag and rub off as much black as possible. Whatever I can't get, I rinse away. Cut the tops off, make one slit, and either use the knife to scrape away the seeds and membranes or rinse away with water. Paper towel dry. Laid flat, spoon heaping spoonfuls of filling on to pepper. Sprinkle cheese. You can either toothpick them closed or roll the pepper. Top with more cheese. Bake in oven until cheese melts.

Maybe it wasn't the best idea to set Tofu Happening on Labor Day weekend because there was low attendance this go around -- and only after I bragged about it's growth! BUT, we did have newcomers, which is always a goal of mine, and the food + company were terrific. I laaaughed...

By my own admission, having a grilled cheese bar is cheating. It is. It's not a singular dish made with care, but an over-the-top crowd pleaser, that undermines everything. (There's a DJ + song request analogy in here somewhere, but I digress.) I wanted to pair it with Brittany's vegetable soup and you just can't beat a grilled cheese sandwich and soup. Too, Leigh made the whole get up very classy by caramelizing onions, roasting poblanos, setting out homemade pesto...the works! I would say that the worst part of the whole deal was the abundance of choice -- what combination of cheese, toppings, butter + bread would make my grilled cheese sandwich dreams come true? All of the food was tops, but KMHD's dish was my favorite.

I am very grateful to Leigh + Robert for hosting. They've got a rad house that is conducive to this kind of thing. They've got THE best stoop.

So, I'm house sitting for my boss again. He lives in a nice, but modest home in the Heights. It's a different world, folks. When I leave the confines of his home to take the dog on a walk or to run to the grocery store, I always have to answer the most asinine questions. "What part of the Middle East are you from?" (That's a new one!) "Are you the cook or the cleaner?" "Are you for hire?" In no way am I exaggerating. It is impossible for me to conceal my annoyance and disdain. In the Heights, I suppose it's fair to ask this kind of stupid shit? In the mornings, you can see 'the help' getting off at the bus stop to work in these people's homes. Anyway, yesterday I was at the grocer's digging through the bin of poblanos. This woman taps me on the shoulder and says, "Ex-cuse me. How do you cook those?" She said it really slow, first pointing to the pepper and then making hand gestures to imply cooking. I told her that I was going to roast them, stuff them with rice, beans, other veg, cheese, and then bake them. Did I actually detect disappointment from her?!!! She simply replied "Oh" and eventually slithered away. OR! People completely ignore me, which is fine.by.me. So, that's that. Another downside is that it's far from my own home and I actually get home sick. BUT, it's not all bad. I mean, Judge has a nice house. There's a nice deck out back. There's the big t.v. with a zillion channels, I'm welcome to everything and anything, I can have company over, and I get paid.

An addendum:

This video is so great and a perfect tie-in to the observations I've made about certain people in the Heights who choose to make comments at me. KMHD and I have been talked to like this our whole lives. It is tiresome and offensive, but no one seems to understand why that would be. We chuckled at the video because everything in it has been said to us in real life. Strangers, co-workers, acquaintances -- they don't see the harm. In fact, if you rebuff any of their comments, you are a "bitch".

So, there's quite a few of us that own homes now. And we all have projects that we'd like to undertake, with either time or money (or both) prohibiting progress. Well, what if we did some sort of Amish barn raising system where we all go to each other's home and complete a project. Is this even possible? Obviously, you will have to pay for your own supplies and the project cannot be too ambitious. For instance, we need help pulling some deep roots of these bushes that I'm certain are connected to the very depths of hell. Or have a compost box built. Or have our house and sidewalks power washed. This sounds great in theory. Yes?

Need to sit down w a calendar and plan a camping trip. It is officially time.

1. Yeah! Labor Day weekend is here! It's my favorite U.S. holiday. Overworked + underpaid -- that's each and every one of us, innit? I suppose I prefer to commemorate like anyone else -- by gathering with friends, drink union-made beer, and eat awesome food. Also, Link Wray is the best music to listen to on Labuh Day.

6. The gift of time. I'll have a little extra this month. I really hope that I don't squander it, although doing nothing has it's merits, too.

8. New camera. I needed to get one before our vacation and, well, I just needed one. I am your friend that takes pictures of everything. After Victor died, I remember thinking that I didn't have enough photos of our time together. It won't happen again.

9. TOFU HAPPENING. I am the current curator of this event of yore. It's not quite the same, but still maintains the basic tenets of eating well (maybe not healthy, but you do get stuffed) and communion. This is the third one since it's been rebooted and it has grown a little every time. People are awesome! Am looking to start other projects, too. Maybe an art night? Where we paint and sip wine out of mugs? An event where we publish a zine in one evening? I am open to ideas.

What's up?

I had a really rad Saturday! It was the kind of day that perhaps a 15 y.o. boy would also enjoy. Had coffee with ATM + Collin (ask him about his John Mellencamp stories!) @ Boulevard. THEN, I had lunch with Keiko @ Pho Thahn Mi. We really didn't have a plan for the day, but ended up going to the brand new Apple store in WLR. It wasn't as ridiculous as I imagined and we ran into Everett, who happens to be the manager. I was so close to buying an iPhone, but, the system was down (?!) and my sale couldn't go through. I'm glad because, hey, I've got a birthday coming up. Too, I've managed this long w/o that hifalutin' contraption, but will admit that the allure of carrying only one thing instead of a separate phone, camera, and mp3 player sounds...neater. After that, we went to Game Stop to get accessories for this shoot-em-up zombie game I obtained for the Wii. THEN, we got fro yo. THEN, we played the kill all zombies game for a couple of hours. THEN, I went home and was completely spent!

Later that evening, things went southward. While ATM and I were busy slaying Z's, I got a text from Judge asking if I could house sit while he tended to a family emergency (nothing to do with Hank & Collins, mind). I'm already set to house sit for eight days in September, so what's an extra few days? Here I am, a temporary Heights resident once again. My duties are to care for Lucy (canine) + Omar Little (feline) and to water all the plants and lawn. Tuesday is trash day.

It's actually not a bad gig, except that I'm far from home and I get a touch lonesome. In order to not burn through my tank of gas so quickly, it's just best if I just stay put on this side of the river before/after work. It's times like this that I wish we had better public transportation, though. At least it's extra $$$ for vacation and other fun things. I'll definitely be getting a lot of reading done as I am too intimidated by His Honor's huge television.

I know I can handle it* because I assisted in executing two baby showers this month whilst planning another Tofu Happening, a long housesitting stint, a trip to Dallax, and a vacation.

Yesterday, Andrew, KMHD & I rewarded ourselves with a quick float down the Caddo River. It was simply perfect. It's just an hour's drive SW of (N)LR and if you've got your own tube, it's inexpensive ($1 to inflate, $8 to shuttle your group). We arrived at the outfitters about noon and were getting out of the river around three, so you don't even need a half-day to have a beer or two whilst floating in an idyllic setting. Might have to try to have another run before it's too late. Summer's almost over!

We paid big bucks to have a new back door installed. That includes a new (energy efficient) door, parts, labor, and a wonderful fee of $120 for the removal of door frame bits with lead paint and the safe disposal of said door frame bits with lead paint.

Anyway, look at our old door. It's not even an exterior door, but maybe some closet or bathroom door. It's ridiculous, you can see outside through the hole! Frankly, I'm a little embarrassed we waited this long to replace it because it's obviously not very secure, but you know. The funds. Or a lack thereof.

And here is the sound replacement. We need to paint the new trim and clean the smudges on the door and wall, but ok!

Are we moving too fast with our home improvement? Ha. Thanks for reading.

Already halfway through the month, but here is my small list of the little things.

1. The light outside looked different this morning and I keep smelling autumn on the air; it'll be here sooner than later and we have plans. Pretty good ones, too. While I appreciate summer, I am not the biggest fan. No, it's terrible in Arkansas unless you've got a reliable lake connection. You are driven inside because outdoor activity is unsafe. And there are some things you can't do inside, like cook, which is bollocks because that's my deal. I don't even miss summer whilst in the soul-killing icy grip of winter. Autumn is the best and my favorite season. I am looking forward to enjoying the dickens out of it.

2. The Farmer's Market is one of the better things about summer, but it's actually a chore for me. There is this Russian farmer who I find likable, though. He's quiet, which I truly appreciate at that early hour, and gives he gives me free garlic. He has a terrible time saying "heirloom watermelon", which is precious. I'm going to miss the okra, tomatoes, berries, figs, corn, melons, and that accent.

3. The constant pull of Memphis, New Orleans, Perdido Key, Seattle, Colorado, and even California, one I haven't felt in a long time. The vastness of this country and it's different environs is wondrous. I think we'll be able to scratch the itch for a few of these in due time.

4. I've got hostessing duties for two baby showers this month. I'm happy to do it! I really love planning things and I'm a great worker bee, but I really ought to make time for my own things, yes?

5. It's tough being a homeowner, no doubt. But, what little we've done to the house as far as home improvement goes has made me love our little home that much more. I totally understand the meaning of "labor of love". I'm still trying to get a handle on patience. We want to build, not maintain, but that's what we're having to do. Maintenance and lots of it.

6. I am going bananas over this recipe from Jen's blog ((( FOOD ORLEANS ))) featuring OKRA. It's so simple, but clever.

The news makes me facepalm so much, I'm red in the face. It's the loud, unhappy halfwits that bother me the most. I've been assured by an older generation that this is not new thing, which is unfortunate. Cyclical messes.

I had a row with a co-worker last week. This is a really sad thing considering that we're a very small office & we're tight-knit. She's been here for months and we've covered for her, so that she could ease into her responsibilities without stress and worry. There are a couple of things that everyone is required to know how to do, no exceptions. I gently reminded her that we needed to get her trained. There was some passive-agressive this & that from her, which I ignored because I really hate that nonsense. She started treating the others poorly, for which I never heard the end of. Anyway, in short, she fronted and proclaimed that she wasn't going to do it, I couldn't make her, and it's not in her job description, which is all true. I informed her that she could take that issue up with the boss and if she felt she had to go strictly by job description that maybe she'd take note that everyone goes above and beyond job description in this office because we are friends, we care for each other, and we do what it takes to TCB. She can be a part of that if she chooses, but no one is going to make her do anything, but SHE WILL LEARN HOW TO DO WHAT IS REQUIRED OF HER. That pretty much ended the argument. She begged for forgiveness and that we never speak of it again, which I agreed to. Still, despite my proceeding with "business as usual", I can tell that it is a struggle for her and that she hasn't actually let go. It's tiresome. I'm just glad that I didn't roll over and had the opportunity to say my piece at the very beginning. For all intents and purposes, this case is closed. Anything else will be deferred to the judge because I'm recusing from the matter. However, I'm still trying to figure out how I got singled out as ringleader. Very annoying stuff. It bothered me very much.

It's hot out there! 100 days of the stuff! I gave up on the geraniums and the petunias, but moved the sweet potato vine to the back. Pray for it's recovery. Also, drink lots of fluids and stay indoors, alright? Don't forget to SPF. And do the tighten' up!

We gave the dining room a new look with paint -- the green was lovely, but not suitable for a windowless room.

It was funny when my stepfather came over to take a look at our decrepit air unit and said, "I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but this thing is OLD." He's right. Look at it. (It doesn't help that the landscape around it hasn't been looked after since before we moved in, but in due time. Please focus!) It really didn't inspire confidence:

Do me a favor and LOOK AT IT. Because sometimes dropping that much money on a home-improvement project means you really don't have anything to show for it. I suppose I *could* make visitors hang outdoors for 5 mins. or so before allowing them inside to really appreciate it, but, honestly, there's no way to actually commemorate it. You WILL admire and appreciate it, damn it! And we'll do the same when we get new insulation in our attic, too!

Other than A/C dramatics, there's not much to report around here. Nothing that can't be handled by tw1tter and the new "+" anyway. I've been shuffling and reorganizing plans, priorities, and desires. It's not ideal, but it's all well and good. Hopefully we can get a trip to Colorado in. And a trip to either Dallax (That's Dallas, TX. Keep up!), Chicago, or New Orleans. We will see.

Things will pick up around here.

If you are having difficulty trying to imagine what it is like in our home, well, it's like a sauna. There's no comfortable anything about it. These days, nighttime brings very little relief. The thermometer, at 10:01 p.m. says it is 92 degrees (but feels like 102).

I don't feel like doing anything. No reading, no writing. Just lots of naps in front of a fan that blows warm air. With any luck, all impurities inside of me have been sweated out.

But, the end is in sight! Tomorrow, the installation process begins.

In other better news, our trying the Banana Leaf Indian food truck (It's ACE. It's amazing for food to be that cheap and so delicious!) made me want to learn to make my own mango lassi. Since cooking is absolutely out of the question, I may just have to do it. Should I do it on the day that it is supposed to be 100 degrees out or 102?

Technically, it' s not the 4th of July, but I can only get things accomplished when it is night time and the temperature is a breezy 90-something degrees in our house. Periodically during the day, we'll get a little burst of energy and we try to get things done, but then it's back to laying around, which takes up a good 85% of our time. And we can't lounge around together, because our arms might touch and ewwwwwwwwww it is TOO HOT/HUMID. It didn't take much convincing that, yes, we need a new HVAC. We're scheduled to get an estimate on Tuesday. We will be getting our front/back door measured for new energy-efficient doors, too. Things are happening around here as far as home-improvement goes, which, despite this evil heat, is keeping me in good spirits. I've got good company with ATM and the cat critters, too.

OFF THE CHARTS HOT:

I did some quick research online to see if I was doing wrong by the cats because they are extremely lethargic. Turns out it's a defense mechanism to overheating, similar to what we do. Nobody move.

So, I had set this particular appointment with my hairdresser three months ago. It was a standard wash & trim, but when I walked in yesterday, I asked her to cut it off, please. "Are you sure?!!!" she asked repeatedly. It wasn't long before everyone who worked at the beauty parlor was asking. I guess they have to know for certain to avoid a crying, remorseful customer. After I convinced her that I was serious, she grabbed my hair by the fistfuls and just chopped it off. I'm pretty sure she enjoyed it. And I'm pretty sure the heat made me do it.

July 2011 Top Ten

1. The unlikely mix of cold watermelon, mint + feta is ruling my tastewaves. If you are at the Green Cuisine food truck, treat yoursel! Or you can just DIY.

2. Switchblade comb is making me the envy of the office.

3. Very berry! I am in blueberry & blackberry heaven.

4. My love for Scott Walker has recently been revived. (Not to be confused with that vile governor of Wisconsin.)

5. I can't quite say that I'm playing tennis, but I've been hittin' tennis balls @ Burns Park with ATM. It's harder than it looks, but really enjoyable.

6. Yogurt pops. A propah, but not total, ice cream substitute. How I did it:

In a blender or a food processor, add 2 cups organic, fat-free plain yogurt (I'm using vanilla next time), 2 super ripe bananas, 1- 1 1/2 c of frozen berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc.), 2 T of honey, and BLEND. If you've got popsicle molds, terrific! I used ye olde popsicle sticks in the paper cup method. (Just be sure to not buy any Koch Industries products.)

7. Friendship bracelets. I haven't made one in 17 years, but it came back to me instantly. I do need a little practice, though.

8. Spray sea salt water in your tresses for awesome beach hair. DIY method is 8 oz. of warm water, 1 T (or so) of fine sea salt, and a few drops of essential oils (your choice!) in a spray bottle. Way to go, No Coast!

9. Lakes, not pools. We actually need help realizing this one. Any Cap'ns out there with a boat and free time?

Can't have light without darkness.

1. We are facing a possible HVAC replacement. Frankly, I am considering the idea of learning to live without air conditioning. It's not a noble pursuit, believe me, but if we are going to live within our means, then we have to make this sacrifice. This isn't a plea for pity because there's no need, it's not as bad as one might imagine. Honestly. With some wardrobe adjustments & a couple of quality fans, we've got this. The hugging warmth and the soothing buzz of the fans actually made me remember that I didn't always live in homes with A/C, I just got spoiled along the way.

2. I've got my critical eye on here, but I've grown weary of social networkers who simply post things they want to buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy. It's basically boring advertising. I love STUFF as much as the next person, but I'm certain there is no race for us to gain as much possessions as we possibly can. Oh, Consumerism! with your boot heel to our throats!

I won't dispense too many details here, but I have two beloved relatives that is or has fallen gravely ill. One has survived far longer than expected and the other is young, recently diagnosed, and currently fighting her malady. I've got so many emotions swirling around inside, but it's outrage that prevails. It makes me so angry that the best people I know find themselves in such a way. These aren't your run-of-the-mill good people; they are actually better than any of us! Do me a favor and DO NOT tell me that it is part of a "Plan" because it's the worst fucking plan.

Last night, ATM & I conceded to the fact that we need to put our plans to travel to New Zealand on the backburner. I have relatives that I really want to spend time with; so, that's a trip to Cortez, Colorado and a trip to Seattle, Washington. Too, we need new tires for the automobile. And we need a new front door. New windows. The list goes on and on like that. Unless we happen upon a bag of money, we're just going to have to knock these off the list slowly, one by one. Here's hoping that we stay healthyish & no ridiculous expenses crop up. In much happier financial news, I paid off a credit card today! I may've quit the pizza-slingin' job, but have two housesitting gigs coming up, so, thankfully, I still have a little extra $$$ coming in. And I can't complain. Things are lovely.

Went to Memphis again this past weekend with KMHD & Brittany. We didn't have a plan other than eat & loiter. It was lovely! I did not return home miserable, broken & worn out, but at ease & better for it. Ready for this? When we rolled into town, we got had our lunch at Gus's. As per usual, we had to wait in line, about 30 minutes. Thankfully, we had a properly-loaded jukebox to help us along.

Ran into Rebekah & Keiko! It's always neat to run into friends in other cities.

After some responsible window-shopping (I mean, we shopped, but only for the necessities), we checked into our hotel and went swimming.

The sun completely drained us of energy, so we went to the juice bar for shots of wheatgrass (really) and juices. I considered it an act of penance for all of our indulgent consumption. We then returned to our room and prepared for an evening out. After getting gussied up, we drove to RP Tracks for BBQ tofu sandwiches & BBQ tofu nachos. I'm almost ashamed to say it, but we totally overindulged. I had a will to go out to have drinks and have a bitchin' good time, but I. ate. too. much. After having searched high and low for the perfect bar for years, we discover the Lamplighter Lounge and are too full to even enjoy the one beer we ordered. It's a true locals-only dive with an attentive barkeeper & a relaxed atmosphere. I was grateful that there was no loud music blaring, so you could have conversations or eavesdrop on others. There was the smell of greasy (and forbidden) burgers and stale cigarette smoke hanging heavy in the air. Great lighting. Cheap drinks. Just perfect. We vowed to return and do it properly, but all I could think about was going to our room to have a lay down, engage in girl-talk, and watch the telly. Ridiculous. I hang my head in shame.

The next morning, we woke up early (because we are DAYHAWKS!!!) and, unbelievably, got stuffed at Brother Juniper's, the best breakfast spot in Memphis. We ate, but didn't overdo it this time. If you've no self-control, pour salt all over your food and drop your flatware on the floor, and voila! You're done. Of course, carbo-loading leads to more in-room lounging.

We slowly packed our things and hit the streets. And, for the umpteenth time, because I always have someone in tow who hasn't been yet, we payed respects to Jay Reatard.

Finally, we took the poor man's tour of Graceland and STAX Records. All that means is that we didn't pay the exorbitant admission fees.
